Tasting of Brunello di Montalcino
  - 9/2/1999 - The Wine Cellar - Edmonton

1993 Brunello di Montalcino - Il Poggione
Bright, clean ruby colour, aromas - impression of freshly toasted bread - raspberry and red currant fruits ; round and rich on the palate, with deeply concentrated berry fruit - still showing plenty of tannins and the acidity really cleans the teeth, clean, long finish with the fruit lasting ; fine structure , but needs a number of years in cellar before it reaches its peak.

1991 Brunello di Montalcino - Fattoria Poggio di Sotto
Medium ruby/garnet in color ; Aromas of roasted nuts - a bit perfumy ; high alcohol shows on the palate ; tannic, but there is considerable fruit showing ; somewhat light in body, with just a moderate finish.

1993 Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille - Pieve Santa Restituta
Much more ruby in colour than the previous wine - also a bit fuller looking as the wine swirls in the glass ; broader aroma base also - richer, fuller - but still a bit backward - should come forth with additional airing ; round, ripe berry fruit flavours - mixed with new oak; tannins are present, but not harsh; flavours are interesting - an array of spices, berry fruit and some vanillin oak ; the finish is average - would have preferred to see more dimension here.

1993 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna di Pianrosso - Ciacchi Piccolomini d'Aragona
Deep ruby in colour - brilliantly clear ; deep penetrating aromas of berry fruit, mixed with some spices and oak ; very full-bodied with tannins underlying massive concentration of dark cherry and currant fruits ; solid structure, but the wine still showing youth - acidity and tannins should even out with time ; a very long finish, that holds well. This is a top quality wine - needing another four years before it reaches an attractive level for drinking.

1993 per Ania - Castello di Gabbiano
Very dark ruby in colour ; aromas are spicy and full, with plenty of fruit showing ; round on the palate; deep, concentrated berry fruit flavours - soft tannins - with some oak showing as well ; good harmony with all components in balance; very attractive - with a very long, fruit-laden finish. This wine can be enjoyed now, but has the structure and depth to last for many years in cellar.

1994 Sangioveto - Badia a Colitbuono
Not as dark as the per Ania, but brilliantly clear - almost sparkling clean ; aromas of roasted meats and cherry fruit - quite penetrating ; velvety tannins underlying the concentrated cherry and currant fruit flavours - some oak evident also; quite round and rich in the mouth, leading to an extremely long, satisfying finish. Our impression much the same as our last tasting in May, 1998, but beginning to round out a little. Could be enjoyed now, but would prefer another couple of years in cellar.
