Tasting of White Burgundies
  - 4/14/1999 -

1995 Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons - Michel Barat
Medium straw colour ; aromas a blend of spices and orange blossom ; plenty of acidity - crisp, clean flavors - citrus ; lasting finish, with the citrus flavours dominating. Easy on the palate. Probably needs a few more years in bottle to round out. Quite an attractive wine.

1993 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets - Guy Amiot
A bit darker straw yellow than the Chablis. Powerful aromas - full, penetrating - toasty. Mineral and citrus flavours some ripe fruit - huge concentration - deep acidity - very intense on the palate, and finishes with strength. This wine hasn't reached its potential as yet, but promises to be an outstanding bottle in a few years time. Extremely low yield - just 20 hectolitres per hectare from 80-year old vines.

1996 Meursault Clos de Tavaux - Francois Gaunoux
Light straw colour - aromas of minerals, butter, some apple blossom, and ripe fruit ; fine acidity, rich and creamy - with fruit flavours marked with oak, extending into the finish. Hasn't reached a point of harmony yet, but moving in that direction. Quite delicious. Give it a few years to reach maturity.

1996 Puligny-Montrachet Les Desmoiselles - Guy Amiot
Light straw colour; powerful, deep aromas - a bit sweet on the edge - spices - toast, but not dominated by oak ; powerful on the palate, with deep, concentrated flavours of honey-toned ripe fruit - some mineral character - extending to an extremely long finish. More harmonious that the 1993 Les Caillerets, but still about 5 years away.

1989 Batard Montrachet - Marc Jomain
Darker in colour - golden. A slight oxidation on the nose, but that gives the wine some charm, also. Full, penetrating aromas that are complex and pleasing. Ripe fruit and spices. On the palate the wine displays excellent acidity to match its rich, spicey flavors. A long, harmonious finish. This wine is fully mature, and its acidity assures many more years of enjoyment.

1992 Montrachet - Guy Amiot
Dark straw - golden hue in color ; the powerful, rich aromas of honey laden fruit are almost intoxicating in themselves - deep and penetrating ; harmonious ripe fruit - honey edged - linger on the palate seemingly for minutes - attractive, very long finish. WOW!
