Vertical Tasting of Chateau Pichon-Longueville-Comtesse de Lalande
  - 11/5/1994 - Edmonton, Alberta

1990
Medium purple, ruby in colour; aromas of new oak - some herbs - some phenol smells. On the palate - light body - good fruit - tannins - some acidity; very pleasant, but early maturing. Not as good as I hoped it would be. Doesn't measure up to the Chateau's standards, in my book.

1989
Much darker than the 1990 - purple / black; fuller nose - smells of tannins, some phenols (but these disappeared on swirling), roasted, oaky, plum fruits. On the palate - freshness, rich fruit, tannic - a bit hot. Aftertaste has some herbaceousness - lasting - really lingers on the palate. An excellent wine, but much too early to drink.

1988
Another brooding dark coloured wine; spicy nose - vanillan oak - more sweet than the 1989 - some floral overtones. Supple, rich - so rich as to suggest higher alcohol - fine balance. Elegant on the palate - blackberry fruit - oak - good acidity & tannins - with a lovely finish. An excellent wine, but I'd give it another 5 years.

1987
Medium colour; lighter nose - fragrant/cedary/spicy; Light bodied wine - nice berry fruit - elegant - good balance - spicy flavoured - easy, gracious on the palate; appeals - softly textured; Fine finish - not long, but pleasant. Not a spectacular wine, but a very nice one. Ready now!

1986
Big, full, dark coloured; Penetrating, huge nose - oaky/ripe cassis fruit; Full bodied, round on the palate - tannins are there but underlying; Good fruit - full bodied and voluptuous - can taste the new oak - very concentrated berry fruit. Lovely finish - long, oaky, blackberries / cassis - lingers on and on. Outstanding - but needs another 7 years.

1985
Moderately full colour - dark ruby; Spicy-cedary nose; Supple, elegant - good fullness on the palate; Still lots of up front tannins that linger on the finish - leaves an astringent character in the mouth. Nevertheless, it has a great deal of fruit. 5 Years!

1984
Excellent colour - fine ruby; Aromas of cedar, cassis, vanillan oak. Elegant on the palate, good structure - velvety finish. Flavors are direct - blackberry/ripe plum, mixed with a bit of oak. Finish is pleasant - moderately long - wine is ready now!

1983
Fine, medium-dark ruby colour. Cedary, spicy nose - some oak showing through.Supple - tannins are subdued-lots of fich, blackberry/cassis flavours - some spicy oak present also; fine structure - very good balance - harmonious, classic style. Lingering finish of berry fruit and oak. On the palate - one of the best drinking wines in this grouping. Can last for a very long time.

1982
Very dark - slightly browning on the edges; penetrating bouquet - spicy, fragrant, heaps of cedar / cassis / herbs; Full, rich, oaky, tannic on the palate, with attractive berry fruits plums - even a hint of prunes (Merlot); Lasting, rich finish - a very powerful wine - needs more cellaring time - a few more years.

1981
Good, dark ruby colour - mid-shoulder rim; Warmm, full, spicy cedary nose - detect some floral overtones, as well; Elegant and supple on the palate - perfectly balanced - delicious berry fruit - lovely finish. Another classically styled wine. Drinks very well now - most attractive - should last for many years to come!

1980
Fine colour - medium dark. Oaky, roasted nuts, herbs on the nose; Lighter bodied wine - easy on the palate - tannins resolved - lovely flavours and finish. This wine is fully ready - can probably be quite appealing for another 5 years.

1979
Colour - medium dark - browning edges. Warm, pruney nose - some smoky oak - herbaceous; Still some tannins - a bit up front, but the wine has some wonderful flavours - good berry fruit - oak tinged - elegant. Lasting finish - very pleasant. Not a great wine, but attractive. Drink up over the next 3-4 years.

1978
Darker colour; Deep, penetrating aromas-spices/vanillan oak/cedar; Very full bodied - tannins-blackberry/cassis flavors - oaky; Lasting tannins in a very long finish. This wine still needs time in the bottle. There's enough fruit here, though, to hold in the cellar for another 4 years. Try it then. An excellent wine!

1964
Browning-medium full colour.Very direct nose-oaky/cedary-some prunes-comes at one all at once. Quite good-fruity-tannins fully resolved-good flavours-nice finish. Very good wine for this vintage-and 30 years old! Surprisingly good!!
